SHARJAH: A gang comprising four Afghan members, who stole a safe deposit box containing Dhs140,000, was recently nabbed by Sharjah Police in cooperation with Ajman Police.

It was also established that the gang members were also involved in the robbery of various commercial outlets in Sharjah and other emirates. The four broke into firms and stole valuables and goods stored in the premises.

The arrest was made following a number of robbery complaints lodged by various owners of commercial shops. It was observed that all robberies were carried out using the same modus operandi of breaking the shops’ doors and robbing the shops of their contents.

A security team was formed to probe the complaints and make arrests of the perpetrators. An Afghan national who was residing in Ajman was suspected of being behind the crime. During interrogation, he confessed to robbing various shops with the help of three partners.

The suspect also admitted to robbing a restaurant at one of the markets in Sharjah and making away with a safe deposit box that contained Dhs140,000.

A search was conducted to trace the whereabouts of the other three cohorts. A residential flat that they were using as a hub was ambushed. Police found out that the suspects were using numerous cars for transport to their target locations for robbery.

After completing legal procedures and searching the house, tools used in breaking and stealing the shops were found and seized. The suspects confessed to robbing various shops and gave the police details about the robbed shops.

They also unveiled an aborted plan of robbing another shop on the day they were arrested. It was also found out that one of the suspects, who had a pending court case, was banned from the country but infiltrated the country illegally. The suspects are currently in detention and will be referred to the Public prosecution.

Sharjah Police are urging owners of commercial outlets to take precautionary safety measures at their shops to avoid being a soft target for robbers. The police have urged shopowners to install security system alarms and surveillance camera for easy and instant detection of robbers.

“Shops that do not have surveillance cameras are an easy target for robbers who usually monitor their targets for months and weeks ahead of robberies to ensure safety rules are not strictly implemented. A shop with a surveillance camera and proper illumination at night (especially if located in remote or deserted area) will not be a target for robbers,” said Sharjah Police.
